This page contains sustainable water management/water sustainability
case studies of WSUD projects from around NSW and other parts of
Australia. Many of the case studies were submitted as entries by
Local Councils to the Sustainable Water Challenge (SWC), which has
been held annually since 2003. Some case studies are weblinks to
sites that explain the project in more detail. Also be aware that
projects may be in more than one grouping for example the retrofit
of commercial building could be found in retrofit and/or also commercial
buildings. There are also detailed conference papers on some other

Ascot
Waters, Perth WA (652k) - Ascot Waters is a 97 hectare
brownfield site (degraded and disused) that has been developed
on the Swan River. The site is 75% open space and features
grassed swales, overland filter strips, sand filters, bioretention
systems, sediment traps, wetlands urban forestry etc.
Inkerman Oasis (St Kilda, Melbourne) Council depot rezoned

Carindale
Pines Estate - (761k) Greenfield subdivision where each
house has a rainwater tank, solar panels and swales in the
street.
Lynbrook Estate - (website) Greenfield subdivision in South
East Melbourne. Constructed in the late 1990's has street
swales and wetland. Brief description can be found on Melbourne

Heritage
Mews - (747k) This paper outlines the design used for
Heritage Mews in Castle Hill in Sydney's Hills District. Rainwater
tanks, under roadway storage and treatment of stormwater.
Waterways Estate
- (website) A large water treatment wetland forms the focus
of this subdivision on Mordialloc Creek, South East of Melbourne.
New Brompton
Estate, Adelaide - (website) The New Brompton Estate was
commissioned in 1991. Its scheme to collect, treat and use
runoff generated on roofs of 15 residences has since been
improved and expanded to include aquifer recharge and storage
and the potential for providing irrigation for the Estates
Central Reserve.

Albert Road (Szencorp Building) - (website) This building
was first constructed in 1987 and has been "recycled"
into Australia's first office refurbishment to achieve a 6 Star
Office Design rating from the Green Building Council of Australia.
They have reduced water consumption by 82% (rainwater harvesting
and grey water recycling, waterless urinals, electronic taps,
etc.) and typical office energy use has been reduced by 70%.
There are also other numerous great innovations in the design
and construction including use of fuel cells.
Sutherland
Shire Council's Business Incubator - (400k) This is a
shared site, half is a business incubator for start up companies
and the other half of the site is part of Wollongong University's
Loftus Campus. The site has permeable paving, swales, rainwater
capture and reuse (More Info about this case study on Literature
Page).
The 60L Building
- (website) Commercial office redeveloped from an industrial
building with full ESD features including wastewater treatment
& recycling, rainwater harvesting and water efficiency.
CH2
- (website) Redevelopment of Melbourne City Council's
headquarters. Office building under construction with full
ESD features including waste water treatment & recycling,
rainwater harvesting, water and energy efficiency.
Charles
Sturt University, Thurgoona Campus (Albury)-
(website) Full suite of ESD features on buildings and integrated
water management in the landscape including greywater treatment
with sub-surface wetlands.
Landcare
Research's - (website) (New Zealand) new science building
at the University of Auckland's Tamaki campus has just opened
(29 April 2005). It has a host of sustainablility features
including low electricity use, rainwater capture and re-use,
waterless composting toilets, raingardens, pervious pavements
etc.
This site also has a lot of good information on low impact
development (LID) in NZ.
Green Building
Council of Australia -(website) Some great examples of
commercial buildings designed to minimise their environmental
impacts.

Park, Zetland - (1Meg) Redevelopment of past industrial
site featuring bioretention swales, retention basis, stormwater

Town Square - (269k)Redevelopment of Council carpark to
commercial, residential and community buildings with rainwater
capture and reuse and stormwater treatment through landscaping

Inkerman
Estate - (Council website) A Council depot rezoned and
redeveloped to provide high density residential units in St
Kilda. Includes greywater treatment, wetland reuse of treated
water in dwellings and affordable housing. This web site features
several of the activities that The City of Port Phillip are

BedZED (Beddington
Zero Energy Development, UK) - (website) BedZED, is an
environmentally-friendly, energy-efficient mix of housing
and work space in Beddington, Sutton, UK. It's being promoted
as the first large-scale 'carbon neutral' community in the
UK. On the water side of things they have reduced mains water
consumption by a third - including installing water saving
appliances and making the most of rain and recycled water.
